The world of freelance IT offers endless possibilities, but the path to success can be complex. As a freelancer, it’s essential to prepare well and make strategic choices. By following these steps, you’ll lay a solid foundation for a thriving career as an IT freelancer. Each of these tips contributes to a strategic and well-thought-out approach to your entrepreneurship in the IT world. Are you ready to take on this challenge?

1. Ken je daily rate!

Wondering what a reasonable day rate is for your skills and experience? Start with thorough market research. Talk to other freelancers in your field, discover with them how to fully utilize your expertise and experience to determine your ideal day rate. Keep in mind that there are nuances between working with direct clients and consultancy companies. Be prepared and know your market value!

2. Work with the right recruiter: your gateway to success

When you inform your network, you’ll undoubtedly be overwhelmed with calls from recruiters, often including international recruiters. Be selective! You should definitely be strict about deciding where and to whom you send your resume.

Key questions to consider:

  • Does the recruiter have direct contact with the client, or do they work as a subcontractor?
  • Does the recruiter already have working consultants with the client?
  • Never give exclusivity to be presented everywhere
  • Only give your GO for 1 position with a specific client
  • Carefully note where you’ve been presented to avoid double submissions!

3. Find a good Accountant

It’s best to find your new accountant through a good reference. Ideally someone you know who speaks highly of their accountant. This limits the risk of surprises later. Tip: take time to speak with at least three accountants, as the first conversation is often like an introduction – free and informative. But here’s the real trick: prepare the same questions that you’ll ask during all these conversations.

This way, you can very well compare how the accountant views & handles certain topics. (For example, taking money out of the company, buying a house with help from the company, salary optimization, dividends & other optimization techniques). It’s also very important to weigh the difference between an accountant who charges per hour & someone who works on a flat-rate basis.

Choose what works best for you. Choose an accountant who is involved in your business and gives personal attention to your financial situation. Especially someone who thinks proactively with your company.

4. Choose the right company structure

The choice between a BV (Besloten vennootschap ) or a Commanditaire vennootschap is a big dilemma for most freelancers. It’s essential to choose a company structure that not only fits your current situation but also your future plans. A well-considered choice between a BV and a Commanditaire vennootschap can be a strong foundation for a successful business.

Especially financially. A BV simply costs more (publication of figures in the Belgian Official Gazette, more fiscal obligations, …) than a Commanditaire vennootschap where your figures are not publicly accessible.
